Recently, I had a long conversation with a friend from Canada. We talked about politics up in Canada and here in the United States. Our attention switched to the upcoming hockey season and he mentioned Sarah Palin being a sexy hockey mom and he would give anything to see her in lingerie.
He told me how hockey-mad Canadians are and that there was a Hockey Anthem or theme written by Dolores Claman back in '60s that was called Canada's second national anthem. When CBC network decided to retire the song, there was an outrage by hockey fans across the Canadian landscape.
I thought very progressive for a woman to write something that huge in 1960 but I didn't actually mouth the words to him. He then told me that the network decided to hold a contest for Canadian musicians and artists to write their rendition to replace Dolores song.
The rules were written and several thousand entries were submitted from artists across the country from coast-to-coast. The winner of the contest would receive a grand prize of $100,000 Canadian and their own place in the minds of hockey screaming fans up there.
We then got into a heated debate about rappers and hockey with me asking if any rappers submitted music. To prove his point, he sent me the link to the submission from this former Toronto rap music artist. To my surprise it was one of rap music's emerging prolific artist whose new rap song I had recently downloaded for my iPod from iTunes.
You can listen, share and enjoy this two-minute "hockey night in Canada" rendition from Jair Dynast who now splits his time between Toronto and Brooklyn, New York. As a matter of fact, I first met Jair at the Crash Mansion, NYC where he performed for the CMJ Music Marathon and we've become quite friendly.
